Children are particularly susceptible to pesticides in their environment. They can be exposed to pesticides in the food they eat and the water they drink. Pesticides are used on farms as well as in home lawn and garden care. 

First described in 1952,3 the syndrome has since engendered over 20 names, including "environmental illness," "total allergy syndrome," "20th century disease," and "chemical AIDS. 

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), representing over 7,000 physicians, is the world's largest medical society concerned with the health of the workforce. 

Safety considerations in the selection and application of pesticides are a worldwide concern. A recent report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) examined the scientific and policy issues of pesticide residues in foods consumed by infants and children.
