Molybdenum is primarily used in alloys, stainless steels, and cast irons. It is highly versatile as an alloy -- it improves strength, hardness, toughness, weldability, elevated temperature strength, and corrosion resistance of other metals.

Many copper mines contain molybdenum, and the Bingham Canyon Mine is no exception. Because molybdenum is a byproduct of our copper operations, we are able to produce it inexpensively. Once the copper ore emerges from the concentrator as a fine powder, it's put through a series of flotations.

Molybdenum is recovered as a by-product of the copper processing operations at Kennecott's Copperton Concentrator. Approximately 18 million pounds of molybdenum is recovered each year through the flotation process.
