Properly lay ground cover and set up other surface protection. Lightly sand out any scratch marks or gouges. Remove all surface contaminants, including: mill glaze (new wood), dirt, dust, grease, oil, soot, mildew, algae, pollen etc... 

When selecting an exterior wood finish, most people depend on either word of mouth recommendations or advertising copy. From our experience in solving the problems folks run into with their logs and wood, the unmistakable conclusion is that those are not necessarily the best sources of information.
